The IWCT Story: Over 30 Years of Compassion in Action

The International Wildlife Coalition Trust (IWCT) was founded in 1992, initially established to promote the conservation of whales and elephants. However, a pivotal moment occurred in 1998 when we were alerted to the brutal reality of the dog meat trade in the Philippines. Deeply moved by the unspeakable cruelty involved, we pivoted our mission to tackle this appalling trade and protect the dogs of the Philippines. From there, our mission only grew!

Over 25 Years of Impact

IWCT has now been working on the ground in the Philippines for over a quarter of a century. In our early years, we worked tirelessly alongside government and law enforcement to end the barbaric slaughter of dogs for meat. We played a crucial role in advocating for the animal welfare legislation that exists today, which finally made it illegal to slaughter dogs for human consumption in the Philippines.

A New Challenge: Controlling the Cycle

As the dog meat trade significantly declined due to stricter laws and enforcement, the country faced a new challenge: a rapidly rising stray dog population. With Rabies remaining a prevalent threat in Southeast Asia, our focus shifted toward prevention and population control.

For the last decade, we have dedicated ourselves to breaking the cycle of suffering through our Kapon (spay and neuter) clinics. What began as a mobile service, reaching remote areas with a dedicated team of vets, has now evolved. While we still reach out to those in need, the opening of our purpose-built Treatment Centre has allowed us to provide a gold standard of veterinary care and rehabilitation. The Centre is also a sanctuary for our rescue dogs; many go on to be rehomed once they have been treated and rehabilitated, while others—who may be too old or unwell to leave—will live out the rest of their days in what we like to think of as a little corner of Filipino dog paradise.

Education: Changing Hearts and Minds

We believe that long-term change only happens through understanding. Our Education Programme is at the heart of our mission, working to change the local culture and improve how animals are treated. By teaching the next generation about responsible pet ownership, we are ensuring a kinder future for all dogs.

Small Team, Huge Impact

The vast majority of IWCT’s funding is raised by our community here in the UK. We pride ourselves on being a lean and efficient organisation. Based in Edenbridge, Kent, our UK operations are run by a tiny, dedicated team: our CEO, Kaytie, and Ollie, who manages our fundraising and marketing.

This small-scale approach ensures that the maximum amount of every donation goes exactly where it is needed most: to the vets, the medicines, and the dogs waiting for a second chance in the Philippines.
