Street Dog Spay Appeal

By Kaytie Grant

This is a street dog spay appeal which is close to our hearts.

Josie is the kind but homeless lady who over time, has adopted several street dogs as her own. The dogs obviously sensed her gentle and caring personality and followed Josie as she pushed her cart along the streets, in search of recyclable items she might be able to sell. The cart and it’s contents are all Josie has, and she shares this with the dogs.

IWCT began delivering parcels of dog food to Josie at the beginning of 2024. Due to her generous nature, despite having little of her own, Josie shares these parcels with other homeless dog owners, reducing the hunger of the street dogs in her neighbourhood.

Street Dog Spay Project

Josie understands the importance of having her dogs spayed and neutered, to prevent unwanted pregnancies and to protect the dogs from diseases. She is not local to our Treatment Centre however, a clinic local to her, where a former IWCT volunteer vet now works, has agreed to spay the dogs. IWCT has pledged to cover the veterinary costs to spay the street dogs of Josie’s, there are ten dogs in total.

Spay Project Complications

All dogs have to undergo laboratory tests before they can enter the clinic, to ensure they are free from infection. Some of Josie’s dogs failed these tests and have been put on antibiotics to clear infection so they are not jeopardising the clinic’s biosecurity. However, two dogs have successfully been spayed.

Upon examination, it has been discovered that some of the dogs have TVT. We discussed TVT in another recent blog.

Whilst this a treatable condition, it is one which incurs even more costs. TVT treatment is quite expensive, along with further lab tests and veterinary consultation.

Spaying Street Dogs

We are determined to complete our mission to spay all Josie’s dogs and give them the treatment they need to have a healthy life on the street in her care. We’ve said before that feeding the stray and street dogs is just the beginning. This is the bigger picture. You can help make a difference in the start of this project by making a donation towards the cost of spaying Josie’s dogs.

IWCT is making a difference to the number of dogs suffering on the street. But we know we can do more. Spaying the dogs on the street is a vital way to control the dog population in The Philippines. To do that, we need your help. Please donate what you can to help us achieve this. Thank you.
